Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jordan: New strength in India-Jordan relations, fruitful talks on the 75th anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held fruitful talks with King Abdullah II in Amman during his two-day state visit to Jordan. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations, boosting trade, and regional peace. In his post in Arabic, PM Modi said, "Had fruitful discussions with His Majesty King Abdullah II in Amman. I appreciate his personal commitment to strengthening India-Jordan relations. This year we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of our bilateral diplomatic relations. This historic achievement will inspire us to move forward with renewed energy in the future."
Significance of the 75th Anniversary of India-Jordan Relations: This visit is particularly significant as 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan. The two countries share centuries-old civilizational ties. This is PM Modi's first full bilateral visit to Jordan, and the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Jordan in 37 years.
During the talks, PM Modi shared an 8-point vision, which includes focusing on several important aspects in the field of trade and economic cooperation, such as fertilizers and agriculture, information technology, healthcare, infrastructure, critical and strategic minerals, civil nuclear cooperation, and people-to-people contact. Partnership and exchange of new technologies are essential for overall development in the fertilizer and agriculture sectors. Information technology has played a crucial role in bringing efficiency and innovation to trade. Cooperation in the healthcare sector can strengthen disease prevention and treatment systems. Infrastructure development will accelerate economic progress. Partnerships in the exploration and management of critical and strategic minerals will enable the effective utilization of natural resources. Civil nuclear cooperation will improve energy resources, and people-to-people contact will promote social harmony and mutual understanding. Thus, taking significant steps towards cooperation and development in all these areas will increase the potential for economic progress and elevate trade to new heights. Both countries have set a target of increasing bilateral trade from the current $2.8 billion to $5 billion.
Agreements and MoUs Signed: During the visit, India and Jordan signed several important agreements, including:
With progress in the field of renewable energy, special attention is being given to water resource management to ensure the conservation of natural resources. Simultaneously, steps being taken towards digital transformation are improving efficiency and productivity across various industries. A twinning agreement has been established between Petra and Ellora to preserve cultural heritage, which will help enhance the cultural and historical significance of both sites. Furthermore, a cultural exchange program running from 2025 to 2029 aims to promote dedication and understanding between different cultures, thereby strengthening mutual relations. Jordan has expressed its desire to join the International Solar Alliance (ISA). Both countries agreed to enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism, de-radicalization, and regional peace (especially on the Gaza issue).
The Indian community in Amman gave a warm welcome to PM Modi. More than 17,500 Indians live in Jordan, contributing to the textile, construction, and other sectors. PM Modi said that the diaspora is playing a crucial role in strengthening India-Jordan relations. This visit is the first leg of a three-nation tour to Jordan, Ethiopia, and Oman. This will strengthen India's 'extended neighborhood' policy and reinforce strategic partnerships in West Asia and Africa.
