On the Demise of Former President Santokhi of Suriname Deep Grief and Sorrow in India: Dr. Vijay Jolly

 

       New Delhi, 31st March 2026: Senior Indian BJP leader Dr. Vijay Jolly stated that the citizens of the Republic of India are saddened, stunned, and grief-stricken by the news of the passing of the former President of Suriname, Chandrikapersad "Chan" Santokhi. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, his political party—the "Progressive Reform Party of Suriname"—and his friends. Dr. Jolly further claimed that he also had the privilege of meeting Santokhi on several occasions at the Presidential Office in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. Dr. Jolly also recalled that in year 2020, Santokhi took the oath of office as President in the Sanskrit language. This act highlighted the strong shared heritage and cultural ties between India and Suriname on the global stage. Prior to this, he served as Suriname's Minister of Justice and Police, as well as its Police Commissioner. Dr. Jolly also claimed that Santokhi consistently worked toward the economic stability and prosperity of Suriname. He was also honored by the Govt. of India with the "Pravasi Bharatiya Samman" award. Furthermore, Santokhi attended the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Overseas Indian Day) celebrations held in India as a Chief Guest. Chandrikapersad 'Chan' Santokhi remained steadfastly dedicated to fostering "people-to-people friendship" between India and Suriname. Today, India has lost a true friend in "Chan" stated Dr. Jolly.We pray to the Almighty God to grant peace to the departed soul and to accord him a place  in the heaven. Om Shanti Om.
