History
of Sohri Leaf A symbol of nature, tradition and purity: Sohri leaf (also called
'Sal' leaf in some regions) has been used in India since ancient times. Particularly
in regions like Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh, this leaf is
used to serve food in religious and social events. It is considered a symbol of
purity, respect for the environment, and Indian rural lifestyle.
When
Indian diaspora communities arrived in countries like Trinidad and Tobago in
the 19th and 20th centuries, they brought with them not only the workforce but
also their traditions, culture and unique food heritage. One of those cultural
heritages was the tradition of serving food on Sohri leaf, which still remains
a symbol of pride and identity among the people of Indian origin there. This
tradition of serving food on leaves flourished there too and today it has
become an important part of festivals, marriages and religious ceremonies of
people of Indian origin.
